Sweet 16 Betting Numbers– Friday

Thursday night’s Sweet 16 schedule produced yet another upset, with Syracuse falling to Butler and Xavier came oh so close to upset number two, but fell 101-96 in double OT. That game no doubt launching a million “bad beat” type stories from bettors who backed Xavier as a 4.5 to 5-point underdog. It’s so discouraging when you have the right side – an underdog who plays it tight to very end – but you watch your ‘dog bet slip away in not one, but two overtimes.

Two of the Sweet 16 teams that played on Thursday — Syracuse and West Virginia — had key injuries. Syracuse got bounced, but West Virginia kept rolling (covering the spread as a 4.5-point favorite over Washington).

Now the Michigan State Spartans, who play the surprising Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday night, have to deal with a key injury as well…will they go the way of Syracuse, or overcome the loss and move forward a la West Virginia.

Early March Madness Predictions 2010: The NCAA Tournament is just a few weeks away (March 16th), which means now is a good time look at some teams that have a realistic shot of winning the whole thing once the madness gets underway. To no one's surprise, the four most likely one seeds are the top four most favored teams to win the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Leading the charge are Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks at +175 moneyline odds; they are followed by Kentucky (+300), Syracuse (+500), and Villanova (+650).


No. 1 Kansas, which is 25-1 overall and 11-0 in Big 12 play, all but has a one seed secured. The Wildcats, at 24-1 and No. 2 in both polls, stand poised to grab the top seed in the South, which would put them in Houston for the regional final if they make it there. Syracuse, currently No. 5 in the AP Poll, stands a good chance at grabbing the top seed in the West; however, the Orange could possibly fall to a two or maybe even a three seed should they falter in their brutal closing schedule, which includes games against Georgetown, Villanova, and Louisville.

Villanova is presently the favorite to get the top seed in the East, but the Wildcats are not a lock at this juncture. Jay Wright's squad has lost two of its last four games and they meet Pitt, Syrcause, and West Virginia before the Big East Tournament begins.


Why is getting a one seed important? Because since 1990 a top seeded team has won the tournament 15 times.

Charlotte will have a difficult task as it tries to bounce back from its first loss in two weeks Wednesday night against the visiting Thunder, who’ve won five in a row and 17 of 20 and can secure a winning season with another victory.

Charlotte (34-32) had a chance to set a franchise record with a seventh straight win overall on Tuesday night, but it lost 99-94 at Indiana as top rebounder and second-leading scorer Gerald Wallace(notes) missed his second consecutive game with an ankle injury.

The Bobcats won 96-89 at reigning East champion Orlando without Wallace on Sunday, but slipped up against the Pacers, who had lost 13 of their previous 16.

“It’s still a young team that’s growing,” Charlotte’s Stephen Jackson(notes) said of the Bobcats. “We tend to get away from understanding what’s important and what’s at stake.”

The team remains in sixth place in the East, percentage points ahead of Miami and three games ahead of ninth-place Chicago, which has lost eight straight.

Although Charlotte will be playing its sixth game in nine days on Wednesday, Jackson refused to blame fatigue for the Bobcats’ latest result.

UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy Live Match Preview and Odds

In continuing to look for some good action this month on UFC/MMA fights, I'm going to look at the big show. UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy offers some value in the MIr/Carwin match-up and the Alves/Fitch match-up.

Online sportsbooks have Mir at -140 and Carwin at +110. With Mir on the road back and looking better than ever, he is favored to win in this close match-up against a great wrestler and a strong, dangerous fighter who is used to finishing the fight in the first round. Carwin has been waiting for this fight and I expect he's more than ready. Carwin is undefeated and wants a title shot, so he has a lot on the line.

The only way I can see Mir losing is if he tries to prove he's as tough as Carwin. Mir's a bouncer and he definitely has an ego, but he also seems smart and dedicated. Mir needs to avoid trying to prove he's as tough as Carwin and instead prove that he's a smarter fighter than Carwin.  If Mir can make it through the first round, he should ultimately be able to put some of his submission skills to use. After that first round, I expect Carwin to press for the takedown and look to try to ground-and-pound Mir. That's when I see Mir taking control of the fight.

I do like Mir's chances on the ground if it goes there. That's why I'm betting on Mir in this matchup.

The other opportunity for value at UFC 111 is Alves vs. Fitch. Currently online sportsbooks have Alves at -135 to Fitch's +105. Alves' last fight was the unanimous decision loss to GSP at UFC 100. At UFC 87, Fitch suffered a loss to GSP as well. I like Alves' chances here though.

This is the second time these two fighters will face each other. While Fitch defeated Alves via a TKO in the second round of UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 5 in 2006, I think Alves has had more impressive victories over better opponents lately. Excluding the loss to GSP for the title, Alves has been commanding his last fights. That's what got him the title shot at UFC 100. With Alves looking strong recently, Fitch's last six fights ended in decisions.

I don't think Fitch will outlast Alves' power and I don't think Alves will get caught by Fitch again. Fitch is a tough customer though and he will stand and trade big shots, but he just doesn't seem to have the consistent and big KO power that Alves can deliver. That being said, Fitch did stop Alves with some effective up kicks and punches last time they saw each other.

I'm not betting on it, but I'm looking for a second round KO by Alves. What I will bet on though is Alves for the victory at -135. That's good value to me.

Keep an eye on the lines as we're a few weeks out and they may start to move a bit as we get closer to the fights. Mir at -150 and Alves at -135.

NCAA Betting: Big East Previews

While there are numerous college basketball tournaments taking place right now, the Big East seems to be where the intrigue is.

Ranked No. 3 in the nation and seeded No. 1 in the Big East championship tournament, the Syracuse Orange had a minor setback on their road to March Madness.

Syracuse lost yesterday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament to the eight-seed Georgetown Hoyas, who won 91-84. They covered, as online sportsbooks had them as 6-point favorites.

The Orange suffered even more, as C/F Arinze Onuaku went down with what looked to be a right knee injury.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said that Onuaku has a strain and will have an MRI; he did not return to the game.

In the meantime, the Georgetown Hoyas will prep for Friday’s semifinal game against the Marquette Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles are 11-2 straight up and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

While the No. 3 Orange dropped out of their respective conference tournament, the No. 1 team in college basketball and top-seed in the Big 12 conference championship, the Kansas Jayhawks, are still alive and kicking.

The Jayhawks were big 17.5-point favorites for their matchup against the Texas Tech Red Raiders yesterday.

While they were able to beat Texas Tech 80-68, the Jayhawks were unable to cover the big spread.

The consensus No. 1 will gear up for a game against the No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies on Friday.

Kansas has been a study in contrast when it comes to SU and ATS records; the Jayhawks are a sparkling 11-1 SU in their last 12 overall but only 3-9 against the number.

The Aggies have been solid across the board in their last 11, going 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS and their last eight games, there have been 2 Overs and 6 Unders.

Texas A&M defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 70-64 in the two teams’ Big 12 matchup yesterday but the Aggies failed to cover as 7.5-point faves.

The Jayhawks have the edge over the Aggies in their last 15 meetings, with a record of 14-1 SU and while the Kansas Jayhawks also have an ATS edge at 10-5, they have been more hit and miss in their last eight Texas A&M matchups, going 3-5 ATS in that time.

The Purdue Boilermakers are fifth-ranked in the nation and the second seed in the Big Ten despite losing forward Robbie Hummel to a torn right ACL in late-February.

The Boilermakers make their debut in the conference tournament on Friday with a date with the Northwestern Wildcats.

The way he destroyed McIntyre was particularly impressive, it was expected to be a hard fight but Brook jumped on the Scotsman from the opening bell and had him down and out inside two minutes.

Bienias, 39-3 (16 KO’s), is seven years Brook’s senior and is vastly more experienced. Two of his three defeats have come in European title tilts against world class operators Oktay Urkal and Junior Witter.
