Big Papi Goes Big: 2010 Home Run Derby

A few months ago he had lost his mojo and was on the way out of Boston. His batting average his despicable and he couldn’t hit a home run to save his life. It was as if his positive steroid results continued to loom over his head, and looked like it David Ortiz would find himself elsewhere before the end of the 2010 season.

But as Ortiz slogged away, his average kept creeping up, and the home runs starting coming and slowly but surely Ortiz began to dig himself out of a hole that he has found himself in since last season. If I was betting on baseball, I wouldn’t have bet on David Ortiz being in Beantown next season.

His performance at the 2010 Home Run Derby has certainly solidified his return.

Like the Big Papi of old, Ortiz sent pitch after pitch careening into the Anaheim sky on the way to being the first Red Sox player to win the Home Run Derby.

The “Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox” was true to form on Monday night, igniting the crowd and looking a far cry from his .185 BA from early May.

He heads into the second half of the season with 18 homers and 57 RBI’s

Here are the result from the 2010 MLB Home Run Derby:

David Ortiz – 32 HR’s

Hanley Ramirez – 26 HR’s

Corey Hart – 13 HR’s

Miguel Cabrera – 12 HR’s

Matt Holliday – 5 HR’s

Nick Swisher – 4 HR’s

Vernon Wells – 2 Hr’s

Chris Young – 1 HR
