Williams Sisters En Route To Another Wimbledon Reunion? Wimbledon 2010

Tennis
Call it moving day in Wimbledon, if you will, as tennis betting fans saw the biggest day of upsets on the women’s side on Monday.

The No. 3, 4, 7, 11, 16 and 17 seeds fell as the female draw worked it’s way down to the quarter-finals and there were plenty of big surprises.

The highlight match of the day was between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. The two have previously had some tough battles at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club but Sharapova had been struggling in the last few years. She finally regained her form this year but she flamed out after losing a first set tiebreaker to Williams, and then eventually the match.

Betting fans saw Serena’s sister, Venus, advance by the same scoreline as she disposed of Jarmila Groth. Meanwhile, there were plenty of upsets throughout the rest of the ranks, which should pave the way for another all-Williams final.

62nd-ranked Petra Kvitova topped No. 3 seed Caroline Wozniacki by a shocking score of 6-2, 6-0 – that’s something sportsbook odds makers didn’t see coming. No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic retired against No. 21 seed Vera Zvonareva, No. 9 seed Na Li upended No. 7 seed Agnieska Radwanska and Tzvetana Pironkova sent No. 11 seed Marion Bartoli packing.

But the biggest win – in the eyes of the Williams sisters today – was the one by No. 8 seed Kim Clijsters, who took out No. 17 seed Justine Henin. Henin was among the favorites to win the title.

So that means that Serena will face Na Li in the next round and then either Kvitova or qualifier Kaia Kanepi in the semi-finals. Venus has a tougher trek, but after facing Pirnokova in the quarters, she’ll get either Clijsters or Zvonareva in the semis.

At this point, the tennis odds heavily favor Serena as she’ll have a cake walk to the final and will likely repeat as champion if she meets her sister – or anyone else.
