Suns Still Haven’t Figured Out This Whole ‘Defense’ Thing

The Phoenix Suns are supposed to be one of the best teams in the Western Conference but after watching Game 2 of the Conference Finals, it’s fairly evident that no matter how good they are, they are a big step behind the Los Angeles Lakers.

At this point, it’s a pretty shrewd bet to hammer the Lakers on the NBA series lines because they simply can’t lose this series.

Through two games, the Suns have shown that regardless of the new faces, new coaches and new attitude, they are still the same old one-dimensional Suns. They can run-and-gun but they still can’t play playoff basketball, which NBA betting fans know is the key to winning a championship.

The Suns have been able to score points – as always – but their problem has been getting stops. Against the Brandon Roy-less Portland Trail Blazers – or with a hobbled Brandon Roy – it wasn’t a problem in Round 1. Against the offensively-challenged San Antonio Spurs in Round 2, it wasn’t a problem. But against the Lakers, they simply can not get any stops and they are getting killed in the paint.

The Lakers are +12 on the glass in this series so far but who really cares about rebounding, turnovers, blocks, assists or anything else when you shoot a whopping 58% from the field? The Lakers have poured in 252 points in the first two contests, which shows that the Suns defense is about equal to a Sunday morning practice.

The scary part for the Suns is that it hasn’t been the Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol Show so much in the first two games; all sorts of other role players are stepping up. When Ron Artest, Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar are chipping in close to 40 points combined, the Lakers are not going to lose.

The Lakers won the regular season series 3-1 by an average margin of 15 points per game and the playoff series have been no different. If you’re a betting pan, pay the juice and hop on the Lakers bandwagon as they are heading back to the Finals.

As for the Suns, they simply don’t have answers on defense and that’s once again going to be their downfall in the playoffs.
